What to Include on Your Board Meeting Agenda

An organized agenda is the foundation of every boardroom meeting. It sets the tone for how involved your board members are in discussions and outlines the topics you’re planning to cover and will give you a head start on creating comprehensive minutes that reflect your decisions.

Ideally, your board’s meeting agenda will include a section for reporting. Department chairpersons and the heads of committees are able to update the board on important information. Based on the needs of your business it could include reports from the executive director and finance director, the nominating committee, and any other important committees or departments.

The next item on your agenda of board meetings should be “new business.” This is where you and your colleagues will discuss the ideas that have been surfacing since the last meeting and how you can best move forward. This is a great time to have a discussion and debate and discussion, so be sure to allow plenty of time for it. This is usually when your board decides to adjust to table, or even to pass an item to a different committee.
