Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a building material that can be used in a variety of ways that offers a variety of advantages to construction projects. It’s a relatively low-cost material, and has enough strength and durability to ensure any structure you build will be sturdy and last for many years. It’s also easy to mold which gives you more flexibility in the design of buildings. This flexibility is crucial to any construction project, but especially one that is time-based and has to stick to strict timelines.

There are a number of different kinds of steel materials which are used, but the most widely used are stainless and mild steel. The proportions of iron, carbon and chromium affect the properties and uses of these alloys. For instance, alloys with an abundance of chromium tend to be extremely hard however they are also robust and corrosion-resistant. They are commonly used in the manufacture of industrial equipment, car parts and kitchen appliances.

Other alloys are also used for specific uses. Tool steel is extremely hard and is able to withstand damage because of its abrasion resistance, and it is often used to make knives and hammers. Nickel steel is corrosion-resistant robust and has excellent welding properties. This kind of steel is widely used in metal chains and wire products. Tungsten steel is extremely resistant to heat and makes great drill bits.

Structural steel is a different kind of steel used in construction projects. It’s typically medium or lower carbon, making it stiff enough to support large structures but flexible enough to be able to withstand the effects of shifting earth. It’s common in pre-engineered metal structures, which are constructed using I-beams, rebar steel rods to support concrete elements.
